Production Process of Ferrous Sulfate
Ferrous sulfate (FeSO₄·7H₂O) is primarily produced through the following methods:
Steel Pickling Method:
- Raw Materials: Steel pickling waste liquid (containing sulfuric acid and ferrous sulfate).
- Process: After steel pickling, the waste liquid is concentrated, crystallized, separated, and dried to obtain ferrous sulfate.
- Reaction: Fe + H₂SO₄ → FeSO₄ + H₂↑
By-product of Titanium Dioxide Production:
- Raw Materials: Waste liquid from the reaction of ilmenite (FeTiO₃) with sulfuric acid.
- Process: The waste liquid is cooled, crystallized, separated, and dried to obtain ferrous sulfate.
- Reaction: FeTiO₃ + 2H₂SO₄ → FeSO₄ + TiOSO₄ + 2H₂O
Reaction of Iron Scraps with Sulfuric Acid:
- Raw Materials: Iron scraps and sulfuric acid.
- Process: Iron scraps react with sulfuric acid to produce a ferrous sulfate solution, which is then concentrated, crystallized, separated, and dried to obtain the final product.
- Reaction: Fe + H₂SO₄ → FeSO₄ + H₂↑
Applications of Ferrous Sulfate in Water Treatment
Ferrous sulfate is widely used in water treatment for the following purposes:
Coagulant:
- Function: As a coagulant, ferrous sulfate can remove suspended solids, colloids, and some organic matter from water.
- Principle: Fe²⁺ hydrolyzes to form Fe(OH)₂, which is further oxidized to Fe(OH)₃, forming flocs that adsorb impurities, facilitating sedimentation and separation.
Phosphorus Removal Agent:
- Function: Used to remove phosphate from wastewater.
- Principle: Fe²⁺ reacts with phosphate to form insoluble ferric phosphate precipitate, achieving phosphorus removal.
Reducing Agent:
- Function: Used to treat wastewater containing heavy metals such as chromium and cyanide.
- Principle: Fe²⁺ reduces Cr⁶⁺ to Cr³⁺, which then forms Cr(OH)₃ precipitate, enabling heavy metal removal.
Decolorizing Agent:
- Function: Used for decolorizing wastewater in industries such as dyeing and papermaking.
- Principle: Fe²⁺ reacts with dye molecules, breaking the chromophores and achieving decolorization.
